cozy weekend

It was time to explore Skaelskor and to step out of the studio for a bit. On a lovely Saturday morning the sun was shinning.
Here you can see a man pushing his tiny boat down the main street.
Most of Saturday for me was working in the cold garage making profiles for the plaster wheel. Gloves and an ipod were much needed.
I have decided to start a play list for each day so everyone knows what the studio sounds like.
1. cat power - satisfaction
2. Rasputina - Wish you were here
3. Skip James - hard times killing(floor blues)
4. Gillian welch - Miss Ohio
5. Lhasa - el desrto
6. Tom Waits - All the world is great

Plunger Exhibition!

As Martin showed in the last post, Friday night was the opening reception in the AppleHouse gallery. The show was a big hit with with its innovative plunger exhibition planning. The work took on a whole new life with the presentation leading the way. All ceramic art in the show was curated by Anders and James from the existing collection at Guldagergaard.

Copenhagen day.

Yesterday, most of the crew went to CPH to check out the sights. So, the house and the studio were pretty quite, except for Jen(me), Eric, Gisela, and Anders.
The hight light was watching Anders searching through two creates of broken Royal Copenhagen porcelain. Apparently left over from a project a few years ago. He was looking for scrap to use in his project of home built alter scenes.
By the time I came out to check on him he had set up an archaeological dig complete with categories such as, figurines, all white, picture frames, lace trim, Flora Danica, blue fluted MEGA and about 10 more.
Note the bare hands and lack of warm clothing, he was out there for about 5 hours. Yes we are in Denmark in November. He went through the entire crate shard by shard. then he dumped the rejects back in for some other lucky artists to find in a couple of years.
one day late - we are all workin' fast.

mmmm. tasty body parts, internal organs, Kristene has made an amazing series of small internal organs to make patterns and more!
Martin has been extruding, building, mold making, model making, and then carving and sanding this very smooth and inviting form.
Jen is preparing this spectacular junk yard find to transform into a mold for slipcasting.
Snails and motor homes, Liv is developing new spaces to occupy.
Many of us are making plaster molds for slipcasting work. Thought we might run out of plaster, but the studio technician Peter had already ordered supplies for us. Art supplies should always come in the Semi truck size.
Anders has made the worlds first and much needed Darth Poppins! A deep breathing spoon full of sugar. With only 3 weeks until the photographer arrives for catalog shots there is no time to waste.
Martin(N), Liv(Sw), Jen(US), and Anders(Dk) are all wrapped up in their work.

Planning and cooking

One of the fun challenges of sharing a big house with 15 people is making dinner. The way it works here at Guldagergaard is to have teams of two take turns cooking each night. The great part is cooks don't have to clean, everyone else does. With the sun setting at 17:00 (5pm) now everyone is working hard on their projects. Tonight guest artist Nina Hole(DK) joins us for dinner and a presentation of her work. She gave us some history on the Center and then we discussed the idea of a traveling exhibition of our work. With many different countries of origin the show could really get some kilometers (miles)

As fall seemed to change instantly into cold winter today coziness and food felt like a natural theme.
Several of us stayed in the house to work on projects. Anders and James are planning an exhibition in our local gallery for this Friday. Some how it involves toilet plungers...I think they're on to somethin' here.
Susanne is starting her ceramics dating service, with her photography assistant Mable.
mmmm...the lunch sandwich.

Our fabulous technician Richard, was kind enough to prepare a very traditional danish "sandwich" for my lunch today. Rye bread followed by butter, boiled potatoes, mayo, horseradish, pickled cucumbers, bell pepper, and green onion. Who knew potatoes and rye bread would be a winning combo? Cleaver Danes.

Studio
Unnur is quickly working on lava landscapes.
Liv has been making molds of tiny vehicles.
Eric is making clay objects and finishing them with a photograph.
Toril is getting the plumbing ready for mold making.
Chris is working on bears.Everyone has been working fast in the studio to get started on their projects.
REASEARCH
Mable was quite happy to find a treasure which the owner let her take home for free.
The next stop on the list is the Junk yard. Several of us were looking for forms to make molds from. Mable takes the lead in full Danish style.
Today everyone is scouting Skaelskor for odd materials and supplies. This delegation headed straight for the second hand store. One of the best second hand stores i've seen in a long time.

gearing up
Last night many of us were introduced to the Danish tradition of "Christmas Beer". Tuborg, one of the countries original breweries released the winter ale. Starting at exactly 8:59pm, you can goto your local pub and welcome in the holiday season. We were told in the larger cities the beer tucks hand out free bottles in the street.
After a good day in the studio, Scott Rench and I went on a bike ride to the windmills. The whirling sound of the huge propellers is totally mesmerizing.

Welcome!

Today is the official beginning of Project Network at the International Ceramic Reasearch Center - Guldagergaard in Skaelskor, Denmark. Network represents 14 artists who have recently graduated from universities in Norway, Sweden, Holland, Denmark, UK, Iceland and US.
After settling into house and studio yesterday we got started with introductions of the group. Karen Harsbo from the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Danish: Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) in Copenhagen led the group on a discussion of everyone’s projects.
Thank you Karen!
